The drain valve is the small valve near the bottom of the tank, used to drain the heater for flushing or service. It has two leak points: the spout, where water comes out when the valve is opened, and the threads, where the valve screws into the tank. A drip from either point, with the rest of the tank dry, points to the valve.
Spout drip versus thread leak
Spout drip. Water dripping from the spout, or from the cap on the spout, usually means the valve is not sealing fully. Plastic drain valves are the common case here: with age and heat, plastic can crack or warp, and the seal inside the valve stops holding. A spout drip that is steady, or that worsens after the valve has been used for flushing, is a strong valve signal.
Thread leak. Water at the point where the valve meets the tank, with the spout dry, points to the threaded joint. That can be a loosened valve, a damaged thread, or corrosion at the joint. A thread leak needs a closer look than a spout drip, because the joint is part of the tank's structure — but it is still a different pattern from a seam leak, which shows water along the bottom seam line rather than at the valve.
If water is at the base but neither the spout nor the threads are wet, check higher up first. A top fitting leak can run down the tank and pool at the base, and our diagnosis hub gives the order for ruling that out.
Why drain valves leak
Drain valves leak for three common reasons. Age and heat wear the valve's seal, especially on plastic valves. Sediment in the tank can lodge in the valve when it is opened for flushing, keeping it from closing fully — which is why a valve that was fine before a flush can start dripping after one. And a valve that has been overtightened or disturbed can develop a thread or seal problem of its own. Our sediment and flush page explains the sediment side of that story, and our drain valve replacement page covers the replacement itself.
What a drain valve leak does, and does not, mean
A drain valve leak does not by itself mean the tank has failed, and it does not by itself mean replacement. It is a part problem, and the usual direction is valve replacement. The exception is when the valve leak is accompanied by other signs — rust at the seam, wet insulation, or a second leak elsewhere — in which case the visit should assess the tank as a whole, using the framework on our repair-versus-replacement page.
Do not leave a drain valve drip indefinitely. A slow drip keeps the base of the tank and the floor damp, and in a closet or under-home installation that dampness can cause damage out of sight. A drip that can be contained with a container is still worth a call, because the valve condition that causes it does not improve on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just put a cap on a dripping drain valve?
A cap on the drain valve spout can contain a spout drip temporarily, but it does not fix the valve, and it can hide a worsening leak. The valve itself should be assessed and, in most cases, replaced.
Why did my drain valve start leaking after a flush?
Sediment can lodge in the valve when it is opened, keeping it from closing fully. That is a known pattern with flushing, and it is one reason a flush and a valve check go together.
Is a drain valve leak the same as a bottom seam leak?
No. A drain valve leak comes from the valve spout or threads at the base. A seam leak comes from the joint where the tank base meets the side. The two patterns have different causes and different fixes.
Do I need a new water heater if the drain valve leaks?
Usually not. A drain valve leak on its own is a part problem. Replacement becomes the conversation only if the tank itself shows other signs of failure.
